WHAT ARE GEISHA? There are many misconceptions over what a geisha truly is and dose. A geisha is a highly skilled performing artist. They are not and never have bean prostitutes. Geisha ( 芸者 ), Geiko ( 芸子 ) or Geigi ( 芸妓 ) are traditional Japanese entertainers, all meaning "artist" in Japanese. Geisha are skilled performers of Japanese dance, singing, playing instruments such as the Shamisen, wearing kimono, tea ceremony and conversation. ORIGINS: Few art forms combine functional, ceremonial and decorative uses as elegantly as the fan. Fewer still can match such diversity with a history stretching back at least 3,000 years. Pictorial records showing some of the earliest fans date from around 3000 BC and there is evidence that the Greeks and Romans used fixed fans as cooling and ceremonial devices, while Chinese literary sources associate the fan with ancient mythical and historical characters. Cultural Topic #5 Tayuu and Oiran

Click hear for a wonderful video on TAYUU Oiran and Tayuu were the highest class of courtesans. They were not Geisha, nor were Geisha Oiran or Tayuu. Geisha used to work along side Oiran and Tayuu though, entertaining in a conversational manner and also dancing, singing and playing music. They were not allowed to compete with the Oiran or Tayuu for their customers, and many strict sumptuary regulations were placed on them to enforce this. Tayuu and Oiran also offered conservative intimacies. They were courtesans as opposed to prostitutes as they provided traditional entertainment in the performing arts much as the geisha did. Thus, courtesan is the preferred term as prostitutes do not provide these services. Tayuu were supposed to be as an ideal wife, for a single night at least.
